The Govt, Presses, Jammu/Srinagar were established in Maharaja’s rules and with the passage of time these remained functional under the Administrative control of various Departments like Industries and Commerce, Labour and Employment and presently under ARI Trainings and Grievances. Prior to the year 1978, Government Press Jammu and Govt. Press, Srinagar was working under the Administrative Control of the Controller, Stationery and Printing of the State.

In 1978 the department was reorganized and the Government Presses were separated from Stationery and Office Supplies Department.

Both the Government Presses at Srinagar and Jammu are now independent departments headed by the General Managers, Manager.

Govt. Presses (Jammu/Srinagar) cater to the printing requirement (Forms, Books, Bills Acts, Government Gazette, SROs, Notifications, Annual Budget, Legislative Assembly Proceedings, Election Material printing material of judiciary etc.) of various Govt, Departments. The Government presses have recently published the J&K Laws at economical and cheap rate.

The Government has instructed the two General Managers of the Government Presses Srinagar and Jammu to formulate and forward a comprehensive proposal for re-organisation of the two Governments presses to bring improvement in their working and to provide better promotional avenues for the staff. The process will be initiated soon.
